  I just wanted to respond to the person who complained about Dr. Iyengar (sp?) and how the Dr. told the mother that he'd keep her child on the acne meds until they were 18-21 years of age but that when she needed new prescriptions, the dr. office said she needed to make an appt. for her child. I worked in a pharmacy for 13 years and I can tell you that that is standard. Prescriptions are only good for one year, regardless of how many refills the dr. indicates. And perhaps not so much with topical meds, oral medications taken long term do require visits to the dr. to verify that the medicine is still working effectively, that nothing has changed with the child's health that could change the efficacy of the meds, as well as maybe just changing the meds to something new and perhaps more effective. So, I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that the only reason the dr. wants you to make an appt. is for that copay; there are valid reasons. And no, an accredited Primary care physician will NOT prescribe dermatological meds for you or your child- they haven't specialized in the field and therefore may not know enough to diagnose and prescribe those types of meds.
